Shipping 101

Since 1873, the Maritime Association of the Port of NY/NJ has served the needs of our maritime-related industry.

Many members of our community have observed that there needed to be an all-inclusive educational tool that would both provide an intensive introduction to the many facets of international water transportation, and show “how it all fits together.”

In searching for a first class training provider, MAPONY/NJ was most pleased to partner with The Artemus Group. Headquartered in Virginia Beach, VA, The Artemus Group is a full service training and placement service provider to the international trade community. They have been successfully conducting training for key public and private sector organizations for several years.

We held our first SHIPPING 101 course in June, 2007, and had a great response. Since then, each of our classes has been very well received. Our classes have had a nice cross-section representing Ocean Carriers, US Coast Guard, NJ State Commission, NY/NJ Port Authority, OTI’s and others. Some student comments were,”  Instructor was very knowledgeable and taught us from A to Z about shipping. It will be a great benefit to a person like me who is new to the shipping industry”, and “I really enjoyed the 101 course, before having this course I have very little knowledge about the industry. It really helps us to understand the key terms in a better way like FMC, 24 Hours Rule, AED, SED, SCAC, Conference, Service Contract, Schedule B etc.”

Based on that success, MAPONY/NJ is proud to offer The Artemus Group “SHIPPING 101” course in the Port of NY/NJ at The Seamen’s Church Institute facility located at 118 Export St. in Port Newark, NJ.  Classes will be conducted from 9:00 AM – 4:30PM each day.

MAPONY/NJ is most grateful to The Seamen’s Church Institute for allowing us to use their facility in Port Newark!

I am sure you will agree that it is a complete compilation of the many facets of international shipping, and that the course is an excellent way to learn the language of shipping, learn operational techniques, understand myriad documentation requirements, and get an overview of  many commercial and pricing concepts.

BUT…….you not only get the classroom training!…participants will also participate in a terminal tour (a picture is worth a thousand words) and they will each receive a comprehensive textbook containing definitions, illustrations, and other valuable material.

For those interested in formal continuing education, we are pleased to advise that upon successful completion of the course, students will be eligible to receive 3.2 CEU from Old Dominion University.  The course also carries 20 CCS/CES Credits through the National Customs House Brokers and Freight Forwarders Association.

Class size will be limited to 20 students, so please act quickly to reserve your spot!
